ON THE REJECTION OF RACIAL CATEGORIES BY DRUM AND BASS MC'S

An interesting article has put the finger - so to speak - on a broad phenomenon in drum and bass " which involves the rejection by mc's of categories based on race ".

According to the authors, when drum and bass mc's " speak ", they speak for everyone " inside " ( as GQ would put it ).

We find this rejection of racial categories in remarks made by a plethora of mc's : Mc Fats ( " Could a black, Could a White, Indian, Chiny, inside tonight " ) ; MC L Natural ( " Whether White or Black, it don't mean jack ), etc. Racial categories are replaced by spatial categories : " people inside ", " people on the right ", " Inside the ride ", etc.

The article in question, written by Morgan Gerard and Jack Sidnell, and published in Popular music and society ( 1740-1712, volume 24, issue 3, 2000 ), can be purchased here.

Highly recommended.
